Well actually the firmware update wasn't mandatory. You could keep the option for OtherOS in exchange for PSN access. You couldn't have both, and Sony was fully within their rights when they asked you to choose between the two. If you wanted to keep OtherOS you would be denied access to PSN because you no longer fit the requirements to log onto PSN (you agreed when signing up for PSN to the stipulation that Sony has the right to change the requirements for PSN access at any time). So ...
Don't think just because a game isn't good you have a right to pirate it. If you can't afford games don't buy them it is not your God given right to play them for free.
It's definitely got a lot of Battlefield in it but I wouldn't say so much Halo. It's slower paced than both those games. Its really got a feel quite like its own. Very gritty and chaotic.

I'm so glad there is all the hate for these guys. I'm proud that we are not rolling over and allowing these hackers to ruin our system. I hope that we all stand together and make it clear that we love our hobbies and understand the harm that that piracy and other security breaches cause. I encourage everyone to keep there Playstations's Xbox's and Wii's legit and make sure that every developer is properly compensated for their hard work!
I don't think anyone noticed but they gave the win to Resistance 2 actually. Most likely in an effort to make up for the whole Mass-Effect 2 debacle.
