The idea of buying AMD seems more likely now, I reckon after reading your post. AMD make RAM aswell as GPUS and CPUs right? As an in house team they could develop a propietery PCI slot for the upgradable xbox, which could even have models made by Asus, GIGABYTE, EVGA etc. If done right, it will still be seen as a console by casuals, especially if the process of upgrading the parts is simplified. That means no opening up cases, but instead removable covers on the console itself, to acces these...

@gamer9

My thoughts EXACTLY

@Utalkin2me

A PC isnt quite an xbox though, is it? Maybe he cant be bothered to mess about with thermal paste or deal with the nerve wracking tension that comes with carefully slotting in RAM modules...

@Hoffmann

Thats all set to change.... The reason a steambox has its drawbacks is because it doesnt run on an OS that people use for more than gaming and browsing. You can make music, e...

Yes. Yes it will. And I dont have a problem with it. It will be even better than the steambox because it will run windows and everything that runs on windows in the process.

For me It will basically be like having a third PC in my house, in the living room, with my games playable on any one of them...

So..... are Xbox gamers, now PC gamers or PC gamers with XBL accounts and W10, xbox gamers?

"1. Ease of use/simplicity.
2. Convenience.
3. Price.

Basically the opposite of PC gaming."

"The majority of console gamers are lazy this way."

You are not wrong with these statements...however...maybe MS has thought about that ( of course they would have been asking themselves these same questions)...and found a way to make it easy as plug and play for console gamers. I reckon this mey be the case. So much...

Damn...My rigs are better than 99.2 % of hardcore Pc gamers and I am primarily an xbox gamer. I thought it was 26% but wow! lol

"On the technical side, Apex was running on a Windows 10 computer, with an Intel i7-6700k CPU, 32GB RAM, NVidia 980 Ti and a SSD"

Interestingly only 26% odf steam users actually have a PC that matches those specs. and this is why I dont think this sort of thing hurts Xbox sales of these games. Most people dont even want a desktop, let alone to spend the cost of a rig with these specs + PSU, fans, cooling, case, hard drives, a mouse & keyboard....oh...and of cour...

Even though I will still play this on my xbox most of the time...its nice to have a free PC version. curious to see how much more visual grunt my 970 adds and also if my drivatar imports between both versions. Think I need to go get me a surface pro as well before I go on holiday. I dont even mind the downgrade in graphics on that device. forza, KI and QB will keep me company on that 8 hour flight.

"When there is better hardware, you can bet they are going to be pushing for you to update."

I know MS can be "all about the money" but I dont think they would 'apple' us. I think they will go for a good base spec and offer gamers the ability to upgrade. I think DX12 will play its role in keeping things optimized across the board. what would help here is if MS bought a chip manufacturer. They could develop fixed GPUS that are plug and play. if they ca...

"Ms is just doing a Steambox which has already been done"

The difference here is that Windows is a proper OS that enables the end user to work like they would on a PC.

You cant run something like this on steam OS, much less a steambox:

"Sounds like Microsoft is just going for a PC/Console Hybrid. Basically a Steam box. I seriously doubt their will be multiple skus for the full box. It'll probably just be modular components you can plug and play and get additional performance you know like you can currently do with PCs?!!"

The trick will be in making those parts easy to fit. You cant have console gamers running loose with thermal paste. plug and play CPUs and GPUS would be a good move. and thats w...

"Do you really think Console gamers are gonna buy a console they need to upgrade?"

Not "need" so much as the option to upgrade. I would be on board for it.

"That's the whole point of a console, its simple and it works. This only make the Console landscape much clearer for Sony and Nintendo"

Does it...As far as we know NX will not be a conventional console. And sony's future lies with PSNow. MS have chosen their p...

"Look at rocket league cross play between pc/ps4 but not on xbox and you expect microsoft to share a whole platform... One step at a time. "

That is a moot to MS point when the audience in question is building their latest rigs around W10. They are sharing with their own customers. Rocket league is just a case of sony getting in their first. MS got no problem with xbox gamers playing with PC...they just dont want sony in on the party.

I am playing fable ...

I think it will happen within the next five years. analysts predict AMD is is heading for bankruptcy by 2020 based on their current status. It would be smart for MS to swoop in, aquire their CPU and GPU tech, which in turn would benefit from a more direct synergy with DX12 as well as benefits for their surface and phone devisions. Having their own X86 licence (though they would have to renew it if they bought AMD) would be VERY handy to a company with MS plans....Saves them costs in R&D a...

Speaking as somebody that mostly games on xbox...I would love a console with upgradable GPUs...as for optimisations....Ill leave all of that to MS. If they have a way of making this work, it will work at a VERY real technical level.

The xbox is going to be to windows, what the steambox was supposed to be to valve's steam OS. Only windows is the far bigger, and more matured OS. Im all for an upgradable xbox. That AMD purchase would make more sense now, as they could develope a propiatary PCI slot for the GPUs. Given teh scalability of PCs and DX12 and the fact that the XB1 is an X86 device....it makes sense.

It will be intresting to see what the nextbox looks like and if upgradability is on the cards ho...
