If you know that eventually a large company is going to do something say wireless controllers, you can get a bunch of patents on "methods" those controllers use to connect to the console. There are a bunch of games that are better left offline. Adding an online experience that will suck makes the game bad in peoples eyes and that time making the online could have been put into the single player experience.
