Because some people get disc read errors or scratch disc problems that the 3yr warranty doesnt cover. So you either send it in for whatever the price to fix, or buy an arcade for 199 and use your old HDD because you already have like 20+ games for it. That is why some people buy a new XBOX 360.
I gotta give it up to MS Marketing and PR though, it looks like what they are doing is working.
