3d will always be a gimmick as long as higher resolutions and 100 fps gaming are still a goal. Once these gave been achieved then gimmicks like 3d will start to become the main focus.

I put about 30 hours into this title last week alone. It needs a graphics update but the gameplay is a new experience. Very kewl.

That's unfortunate. DLC guarantees a shorter lifespan. you'll see me praising bf3 but sorry DICE I don't bother with DLC.
Once a next gen engine title launches...thats it gen over. A good indicator would point to bf3 as it cuts out dx9 entirely. Still yet to be decided until more info is released
