I dunno about Locke. He is pretty generic and he fights with a sword. There are already many characters who fight with swords and its clear from the new characters, Square wants to have more variety.
Shadow is the Ninja class and fights with kunai and had the throw ability for shuriken. There's also his dog. Maybe for an EX burst limit break?
Still waiting for new characters of FFVI and FFIX.

I think the ending of Dirge only hinted at Crisis Core. Because the reveal of Genesis at the end was to pave the way for Crisis Core (even though it's a prequel).

Master Sword is probably THE most iconic sword in gaming. The music and feeling when you obtain it after hours of effort is nothing less than satisfying.
