2012 was a weak year overall Far Cry 3 at least had pretty good reasons to put the player side-tracked from the main story unlike many other games.

I think MGS Ground Zeroes will help a bit on how storyline can be told in videogames.
there many good devs out there just look at bioshock infinite, gta5 , last of us ,metro last light, etc they have a story
