There are 2 versions of gameplay - casual which is gesture based and expert which is closer to 1:1. Looks like he was playing casual and the guy had a backpack on which probably makes it harder for the camera to follow his skeleton.

All open world games have you doing the same things over and over again. You could replace RDR with GTA4, Saints Row, Infamous etc, and the article would still make sense. There are just some limitations to open world games which could make it seem repetitive.
