FYI, I have an nVidia GPU and have zero issues, so Idk what you're talkin about.
If the enemy AI was so high that it could instantly adapt to a humans playstyle, players would get tired of losing and not play anymore. So making AI have low IQ, or lowered it's ability to adapt, it makes sense.
If they really thought that the game was no good, Bethesda would have withheld review copies all together from all publishers, and not the ones specifically based in the UK.

Understandable. The game also comes with Co-op. It's in it's beta phase right now, but eventually I think they are going to have the entire campaign available to play cooperatively.
As someone who has already put several thousands of hours into this game and can attest to it's steep learning curve, using a controller on top of that isn't going to make it any easier. You might be able to scrape by in Single Player Skirmishes and the Campaigns, but if you want to make any meaningful improvements to your ability to play, you'll need a mouse, keyboard, and an easy to memorize hotkey profile for all of the units, buildings, formations, game commands, control group...

You probably have a mission that requires a specific ship/companion that needs to be completed before the game will let you switch ships or reassign crew members.
