They found out with the N64 that if you don't have enough product to fit the demand it makes people want it more. They've been doing the same ever since. I was working at a game store in NYC when it released. The lack of availability made people practically foam at the mouth for one. Eventually they became available but not after a few months of Cabbage Patch Kids like hysteria. I don't think it was intentional with the N64 but it kinda seems like a business model at this point.
