The PS3 was more powerful and it sported and still sports a wider library of games. The PS3 also had more personal freedom from day 1 with the ability to pick you own HDD and industry standard cables and attachments. Built in WiFi and HDMI.
Basically though more expensive Sony brought a more advanced console. Now the PS4 is cheaper an still more advanced than the xbone.
