Mario is pretty much Nintendo's Western hook, in Asia it's stuff like Pikmin.
Niche? Pikmin is big man, especially in Asia. Not my thing but some markets just eat it up.

On a political note, the new Leadership Cabinet seems to have hit the ground running and is beginning to open up the population to a lot more freedoms than they were allowed before. It's still a strange party but a lot younger and seems to be far more concerned about the general populations than the last Leadership.
