I played the old school FF games, and still enjoyed FF13 for what it is.

You're correct actually, i got into the entire SMT series through Persona 3, but that game was dark and gloomy, but nothing Digital Devil Saga or Nocturne level of gloominess.
I actually died on my second encounter in Nocturne, i was stunned that i started scratching my head in surprise. I knew it was a hard game, but not that hard. Though, Digital Devil Saga is a little less difficult game. They're both really good games. ...

Probably, its mostly because they're dark and gritty, but they're really well made games.

I played all of the Yakuza games, the first one was rough around the edges, and the controls were sluggish at times. But i've never had any problems with the frame rate. Pop-ins are expected with any game that has that many people on screen at once, what other western game does that many people on screen without pop-...

If you're talking about technical advancements, graphics are all what western devs care about, the gameplay is like an after thought to them.
