It could be MS have enough price leway to keep the 360 looking attractive to customers. As Sony have reduced production costs to pass on to consumers.

Is not damage meant to give some sort of visual feedback. So yes collision effect the handling of the car, but if it is represented visually you know exactly where the effect is coming from.
