@OpenGL - I know, Wii software can never technically match the standards of Alan Wake because of obvious hardware limitations. Still, some games on the Wii really look like Xbox 360 games when component cables are used; e.g. Monster Hunter Tri.

But it won't be just a Wii in HD. It will support 3D, Blu-ray, an online service like Xbox Live, DLC and have some innovative capability. That's for sure.

so what's your point? Sony hasn't made any money. If they had used cheaper hardware in the 1st place, they could have put it at a lower price. And even at $699, they were at a loss.
Sony keeps showing off future tech with their PS3 and it looks like they're not going to stop. It's all very impressive, but its not the current tech. They want everyone to spend thousands for 3DTV's and move and the glasses.. with this kind of marketing strategy, they are doom...
Nintendo made a huge profit with Gamecube's hardware. This (along with GBA and DS) helped them survive despite Gamecube's low sales.

True, but one or two consoles will be out by holiday 2012. Most likely Wii's successor. There is already talk of PS4 in the works, so who knows? Maybe we'll have PS4 by 2012. And don't forget that Xbox 360 needs a successor; that thing's been out since 2005!
Also, yes the console business is going to be hurt, as many analysts have predicted. We might not see a ninth generation altogether... :(
