80% of tvs sold these days are 4k so yes it SHOULD have 4k output and scaling capabilities and NO it would not drive the price up at all.

No it is poorly thought out. I agree there is no need for a uhd blu ray drive if you want to keep costs down for entry level ps4.
But to not simply give it an hdmi 2.0 port which costs next to nothing is a strategic move to sell more ps4 neos and its a slap on the face to sony customers.
It should output at 4k(upscaled) for modern tvs like the xbox one s does plain and simple.
You're ignorant if you think outputting a 1080p feed to a 4k tv will have the same results as a dedicated 4k feed.
4k upscaling output from the console itself looks A LOT better than just 1080p output and then relying on the tv to do the work.
The tv will still only recognise it as 1080p input not 4k.
Plus tv upscaling can cause lag
1080p/60 games like forza, halo, gears ect all done on a system with 1.3 - 1.4tf gpu, jaguar cpu and 68gbps 8gb ddr3 + esram.
You think they wont be able to run those same games 4k/60 with a 6tf+ gpu, amd zen cpu and 320gbps 12gb ram?

Exactly. A few of devs have already said they would rather do 1440p or whatever and up the graphical effects on scorpio and have it scale up to 4k.
1st party games will most likely be native 4k tho as ms is pushing it.

Because there is no mention of 4k or uhd BR on the box at all and the engravings for bluray on the side of the console are standard BR exactly like og ps4.
