The character model looks way out of place in that environment. Its like a straight 2D cut from an anime and shoved into a 3D environment!
Seeing how every generation region is based on a real place it could go for a long time as far as people are still buying the games. Like Kanto, johto, hoenn and sinnoh are based on Japan. Unova based on new York while the newest pokemon X and Y is based on Paris.

The thing that people forget is that even if the Wii u sales lack like the GameCube, Nintendo still have the 3ds as their main income.
They survived the GameCube era without any loses in profits due to the success of the gameboy advance.
Going by how well the 3ds is doing I would say no.
It probably won't do ds numbers, but I can see it reach 60-90 million maybe even more by the end of it lifespan.
To be honest this isn't the reason they are obscure.
Look at pikmin, it was a new IP in the GameCube era and now one of Nintendo's valuable franchises.
If they invest well on a new AAA IP with good marketing then it should fare well.
The only problem is the high expectations from people thinking those new IPs gonna rival the likes of Mario or Zelda.
