I couldn't care less that MGS4 has sold 5 million plus, I care about whether or not it's a quality title... Jesus, every other line of yours is sales, sales, sales. Do you actually care if the games are good?

So THAT's the basis for reviews now, does a game satisfy its fans?! Hmmmm, fan = short for FANATIC, so I'm pretty sure if they are a fanatic about a franchise and the devs $hit out a carbon copy they will enjoy it, I am ecstatic about Mod War 2 for instance, but I wouldn't give it a 9, maybe an 8.
#1 this is kinda old, had this pre-ordered for the same price at Amazon for like, a month.
#2 it's not THAT sick of a deal, but better than what you'll pay at other retailers.
Everyone might as well just vote for Halo: ODST or Mod War 2... apparently making sequels/expansions with no visual and/or gameplay improvements/innovations is all it takes to score a 9 or above these days.

I agree with EVERYTHING you said about their fans, their games' sales and so on, but none of those are a basis for review criteria.
Questioning the ethics of review scores and you turn it into a fanboy argument... why not ADD something or make a logical defense against what's being said that you are opposed to instead of reverting to the fanboy defense?

I'm officially no longer using IGN... too bad too, there are SOME unwavering editors there, but it's getting ridiculous now. I was put off originally by the effing 10 GTAIV got, but recently things have gone to complete $hit over there.
I just know Mod War 2 is going to get a 10 now.... if it doesn't and Halo: ODST got a 9, then it's true that someone at IGN is afraid of the fanboy fanbase or they are starting to include whether or not they (the reviewer) had fun playing the game...
It was just Raiden that made people sour to the series and some didn't take to the whole <spoilers>... colonel turning out to be an AI and so forth; too many twists even for MGS fans apparently and <more spoilers>... Raiden not having balls weirded some people out too.
Nobody ever bashed the quality of production values, gameplay, or visuals.

"Better" is often a subjective term... better visuals, I'd say yes, better overall experience, i.e. gameplay, story, length; I think MGS4 still offers more than any game yet out there, rivaled perhaps only by Fallout 3 in terms of sheer crap/people/animals/objects to interact with.

I agree about DVDs not limiting textures (at least not it Call of Duty games), but there are many 60 fps games that have MUCH better textures and I don't mean PC games.

I totally agree about judging games on their own merits, with the exception of say two nearly identical military warfare FPS games or something, but this article/link is about A REVIEW that follows certain guidelines that just don't seem to hold up to the score.
