Well HL2 can't technically be considered to have a 'good' story because the freaking game has been out for nearly 10 YEARS! and still no conclusion in sight!(Cliffhanger in EP2)
As for MGS4, the story started getting kind of goofy in MGS3 but MGS4 just gives the word ludicrous a new definition. (Big Boss came back to life in the end of the game for Fudge's sake!)
Because of mindless hack n slash games like 'God of War', or pointless over-the-shoulder shoot em' ups like 'Gears of War' that consider a good storyline about as important as having to appeal to someone over the age of 13 to sell the damn thing.
