Yes you can. if you buy a server like you can in counter strike and cod4 PC, the owner of the server can mod the serverfiles can create custom maps, weapon restrictions, new modes etc. etc.

the SP is where its at. they have 1 more chance to get it right. modders can always fix the multiplayer if they allow dedicated servers so they can mod their own servers to how it was in the original doom.
to this day doom1+2 are popular with speedrunning and to a lesser degree custom WADs. singleplayer could still salvage the game and that's what i'm hoping for. remember, ID is working on singleplayer and the multiplayer was passed off to whole other team.
