I think it's a very interesting way to expose players to additional gameplay mechanics in a single player story they might have otherwise missed, like Kill X by doing Y...
It's also a nice metric for seeing how far along friends are progressing through single player games. It's far from acurate, but if people aren't getting many plot based achievements they probably aren't spending time with a game which may or may not mean you should avoid it...
From a psychological perspective, one could say gamers only play games in order to win. To either beat the computer, themselves or another player. If there is no such antagonistic force how does one succeed or win? Achievements help measure things and set (normally) realistic goals for the player to achieve that are then acknowledged by the gaming populace as a whole…

I think it's just boiling down to the fact that gamers expect a full package now, and that includes quality acting...
The game wasn't terrible on that front in my mind, but it wasn't anything noteworthy either...
