IMO 08 has been the best year ever that I can remember in gaming.
I purchased and played a ton of games for both consoles but I feel Sony offered more variety in terms of exclusives in 08. So I would say Sony had the better software.
I just hope we can have the same debate this time next year (09).
95% of my gaming is done online and that is split 60 / 40 in favor of XBL over PSN. It is rare that I run into filth spewing losers on PSN but it is a daily occurrence on XBL.
IMHO Halo (2nd is Gears) has the worst following in the history of console gaming. I didn't even put my head set on while playing Halo 2, 3 or Gears unless my friends were on with me. Usually in private chat.
This is one of the biggest reasons I levitate towards games like Ghost Recon, Rainbow ...
you just described my exact response / feelings when I hear about Gears of War 2 updates. I get frustrated really fast when a game is released with so many problems.
Socom is running a lot better now than it did before. You should actually try the updates before giving up on it. I am holding out hope G2 will eventually be fixed as well but considering Epics track record I am not overly optimistic.

GTA IV and Gears of War 2.
GTA IV was nothing like the past versions. It got so repetitive so early on and it severely lacked diversity.
Gears 2 I was a little disappointed with the ending of the single player. Love horde mode but hate nearly everything about their matchmaking and I am not to fond of the tweaks they made to the engine (too many bugs, glitches and over all balance issues).

I had a blast with GRID myself but I like all racers (sim and arcade)
My biggest disappointment in 08 came from Gears 2 (only because it was my most anticipated game of the year for me and my expectations were probably way too optimistic) because I don't like what Epic did with the online (matchmaking, weapon tweaks and voting options). I also wasn't too fond of how the single player campaign ended. There was no final battle and it was unexpect...
I am looking for another gaming tv and the one you purchased is on my list. The only problem with most LCD sets is input lag. It's hard to research this issue without actually purchasing them and testing them in house because most reviewers don't test input lag.
Sets I am considering at the moment is the
Sammy 650 and 850 (750 is out because of the Halo issue)

That is a good point and would make an interesting article if written by a truely impartial journalist. I wonder if the proper research was done which company would in fact come out on top of customer satisfaction.
After playing Gears 2 a few times online I wondered the same thing about the reviews. Online / multiplayer is a huge component of shooters. Why did they all rush to get their reviews out before any of them tried it online? Why don't you see any follow up opinions from the top sources in the media about just how broken this game is?
I played the original Gears online for 6 months straight. I ultimately ended up leaving the game because of glitches, bugs and their overall net code ...

All the negative articles about Sony is pathetic. Sony supported (still supports the PS2) their past 2 consoles far longer than any other manufacturer and there is no reason to think they wont support the PS3 even longer. When the PS3 drops in price it's yearly totals will climb...
in the gaming community. It's mostly just the net that you see this type of nonsense. Most of the people that spew venom on sites like this aren't even gamers. Yeah they might actually own a gaming system or two but they are very casual in their gaming habits. Trolling the net is their real source of entertainment.

I am not the least bit surprised by these numbers. When I picked up DK from BBuy most the people around me were doing the same. Best Buy had them in a display at the front door and nearly everyone walking in was grabbing a copy. BluRay is going to become the norm sooner than most thought possible.
