The PS4 is a direct counter to that statement. I would replace that point with *Improving their image. PS4 is "4theplayers" Nintendo comes off as a casual company to most that don't know any better. And with the whole Amiibo craze even i'm starting to believe it.
Considering this is pretty much about FF7 and Shenmue 3, I'd say announcing games 3-6 years before they come out is definitely too early. It was definitely a cheap move to gain hype for what otherwise would've been an average Conference. That is nothing new to E3 though.
