I don't think that is the case at all. Nintendo did not anticipate that people would go nuts for the characters people went nuts for. They printed millions of mario and Luigi, no one cares! If anything the demand for the lesser known characters should send Nintendo a clear message. People don't care that much about Mario.
The reaction to Nintendo games and the Wii u by the gaming press just proves what a set of total idiots the majority are. They wanted to hate Nintendo this generation, for some reason known only to them. And now they are saying comments like the one in Joystick.
Bar a few exceptions to the rule most of the gaming press tried to destroy the wii u and now realizing how bad the ps4 and xbox actually are they are trying to jump ship.

The wii u is not misunderstood. Consumers misunderstand that the ps4 and xbox one are not really very good consoles. The wii u is a great console with one major drawback, the company that makes it is not willing to bribe third party developers for games to be released on the system, well not without Nintendo getting full ownership and publishing rights.

x86 is not a good architecture for a game console. The only reason 3rd parties abandoned Nintendo was because Nintendo did not agree to third parties patch heavy business concept.

Since it has sold 7.3 officially in September it is hard to take Vgchartz in late december very seriously at all. I would also point out that game sales prove console numbers. There has been no spike in game sales for Xbox 1 or ps4. So is it really believable that they have sold as many as 30 million units?

A great deal of the 20million was marketing costs.
A game costs around 5 million to make. (unless it is made by Ubisoft, who have huge teams to pay and spend more money on Marketing than making the game!)
It is even cheaper to make a game in Japan. In Japan a team is still rather small. (all of Nintendo is approximately 1500 people!)

Dude, I work in a Japanese game studio and these are some hot rumors for you that are almost true. Dragon Quest 11 is a 3ds game. ffXV is never coming out for any console. And Phantom pain won't fit on a disk. Really, it is too big to be compressed and sold.

Most Japanese stores, even major electronics retailers, only stock 5 PS4s.
