The myth about bad driver support is only truly believed by Nvidia fanboys, if AMD drivers were that bad then I wouldn't be replying to you on this computer.
Not really man: Radeon 9500 Pro, 9600 Pro, X800 GTO, X1950 Pro, 2600 XT, HD 3850, HD 4850, HD 4870, HD 5770, HD 6850, HD 6870... All these cards offered great performance for under $200 (not that I took this list from anywhere ^^).
My drivers are working fine and I've only had one driver related problem since last year :D
Because AMD cards usually dominate the low and mid end especially when it comes to price/performance. My 6850 may be mid range or low end or whatever but I'm pulling high settings in all the games I like to play. So what if I can't max out AA or AF or run shadows on uber super high with oversampling but dammit I like the value.
tl;dr AMD offers great price to performance
