If Eurogamer have it correct, and I'm sure they would do, it's the split panel.

http://www.eurogamer.net/ar...

The specs could change no doubt, but if they don't that will mean Sony are going with LCD instead of OLED. That should help with the price, although it will struggle to compete with Crystal Co...

@morganfell,

That will probably be based off of experiences with the old dev kit and not Crystal Cove. Hopefully both kits will be more on par with each other once Cove gets into the hands of the devs.

To your comment below:-

I don't see what Keighley's intelligence has to do with anything. In any case, the following EDGE article has been cited a few times this week.

I assume you're referring to ICE team engineer, Cort's tweet? https://twitter.com/postgoo...

I don't know where it's been "touted to significantly improve the graphics performance on PS4", but Cort is merely talking about texture tiling/swizzling on the CPU through use of SIMD instructions. The point of this being to optimize for the texture access patt...

@vergilxx3,

We may see some footage of new and/or upcoming games, but not that much I shouldn't think.

Most of the videos coming out of GDC are likely to be technology and development related. We may see some recordings of scheduled sessions/presentations/panels too, but a lot of those will probably end up on the GDC website (GDC Vault) and require membership to access, although the presentation slides will be publicly accessible.

"This game will gonna fail SO HARD... insane"

Enlighten me if you will, please... how and/or why is it going to fail exactly? Also, how have you developed such wondrous foresight? I keep trying to look into the future but for some reason I just cant do it!? :(

It's an event for industry professionals only, not the public. There will be select press coverage though, but nothing close to the likes of trade fairs such as E3, PAX, GamesCom, etc. Going it alone, without a studio paying for an employee's attendance, you're looking at costly fees.

To all those here that are looking at the graphics and not the simulation, you're missing the point.

On the other hand, this probably shouldn't be classed as 'news'.

I'm personally looking forward to getting my hands on as many of the programming/tech presentations as possible. I'm expecting some good gpu compute focused stuff from many more console-centric devs now, instead of just the usual ones from nVidia/AMD/Microsoft and the select PC dev. I'm hoping for some good info on the engine-side core systems too, not just graphics stuff - I'm keen to see how the 'big dogs' are optimizing for task scheduling on both the cpu and gpu to...

Where exactly did you see incompetence and distraction? I have a hard time believing you really think that based on this video, not to mention all the other ones, where I'm seeing nothing close to what you're seeing!? :|

To those thinking this is a "bad thing", remember that this doesn't tie companies together in some kind of financial deal - it's a consortium. These sorts of things occur often in the name of collaboratively improving the state of a field and/or industry through standardization, knowledge-pooling, etc.

This particular consortium contains:-

Epson
Avegant
Oculus VR
GameFace Labs
Big Blue Bubble

On a slight tangent to the article, I'll take this opportunity to 'big up' Naughty Dog's Jason Gregory who's been mentioned here...

... He released a book in 2009, 'Game Engine Architecture'. As a programmer it was such a valuable insight into top-down game engine design on the whole, and it oozes quality. It really is a must-read for those looking to join the field, and is a great read for those in it too as it gives you the perspective as given f...

The current minimum specs for the hangar module in Star Citizen are listed as:-

Windows Vista, Windows 7 or Windows 8
DirectX 11 graphics card with 1GB Video RAM
Quad core CPU
8GB Memory

Can't help but wonder what the recommended specs will become as more things become available besides just the hangar module.

Just make sure you're running 64-bit Windows 7/8 and not 32-bit prior to upgrading that ram, otherwise you won't be able to use more than the 4GB anyway.

Loving the jokes flying out of those tweets on AF. I wonder how many journos/bloggers/people will quote the tech talk from those devs thinking they're actually being serious. :D

Considering his background and experience in the industry he'd absolutely be an asset to Naughty Dog. Why would expectations be higher at ND than at Epic, and why "must" it have to be a "pressure" thing?

I could suggest it's more likely due to the differences of the same role when in a game team versus the role in a more R&D-oriented engine team... I could say that, but then I, too, would be guilty of untenable speculation.

@Sonarus,

Senior graphics programmer at Epic. He played a strong role in bringing about physically-based materials, shading and lighting into Unreal Engine 4.

Very, very impressive work going on there. You have to amass quite the skill-set to even come close to emulating the rsx and cell functionality in general, never mind what I'm actually seeing here. I wouldn't expect this sort of progress in such a relatively short time-frame either, all things considered... programmer envy setting in! ;)

It was never about tiled resources. This is to do with texture swizzling.

4482d ago 0 agree0 disagreeView comment

Cort's talking about using assembly programming ('ASM' for short) to hand-optimize a method of texture swizzling - it's for better cache accesses. In this case it's all about SIMD speed. It's nothing brand new... although the way he's using it for this task is bound to be a sight to behold.

"Personally, I wish MS and Sony would allow AMD to release their MantleAPI software on both next gen systems to squeeze out more power"

Neither console needs Mantle though. They already have their own low-level API's providing near-full hardware access and control.

The whole rationale behind Mantle was to bring some form of console-esque API control back to the PC where abstraction penalties, driver and api overheads are much higher.
