I never played Fortnite. But what you are describing is essentially a smart thing on their part, gets them more users which in turn assures them more sales.
All companies do (or try) to do this. They may have lost you as their potential client but they gained 15 others.

That’s why Android is full of spyware and trojans. Do you feel safe using your card online using that phone? Apple is secure because of their practices.
