I'd doubt that could ever of boosted Wii U sales, I'd hasten a guarantee that the new Pokemon games (Sun & Moon) have higher sales than normal when the sales statistics come in, thanks to Pokemon Go.
Wii U has gone by hardly noticed in terms of mainstream gaming media, with the odd exception. A huge buzz would not instantly make the Pokemon Go audience delve deep enough to seek out a Wii U.

Personally this wouldn't faze me, I'm getting Switch. Hell or high water in March.
I'm looking forward to the Switch, and pro Nintendo but acknowledge PS4 owners have a hell of a line up of games to look forward to. PS4 is going to deliver this year more than the previous, without a shadow of doubt.

After digesting this opinion piece, I can say Virtual Console is a selling point to core Nintendo fans, and a buzz has stemmed from the rumoured inclusion of Gamecube titles, but from that core audience. I personally cannot wait for this, but know it's marketability in becoming serious competition for Sony & Microsoft revolves around bringing fresh new releases to the system along with a solid third party support.
You're right Microsoft does yet let's define recycling by comparison. Call of Duty as an example is pure recycling, you compare the games it's the exact same formula. Compare Mario games, you will find noticeable differences, an evolution of the character, changes of gameplay mechanics, and the type of game that he's featured in.
Platform, Racing, RPG, over the years he's genre jumped.
For all the negatives it may grant me, Nintendo is just using common sense on Switch. Take a peak at sales & recent gaming culture, portability is a massive factor, it's what has allowed other platforms to rise through phones & tablets.
Nintendo's greatest success is handhelds, although the Wii sold immensely well. Having a home console that you can take on the move puts the question of it's practicality into check mate. You can use it anywhere.
I'm guilty responsible for a lot of searches, anticipation got too much for me. Everyday from September until the reveal I was googling "nx" on a daily basis....multiple times.
On the Wii they released Resident Evil Dark Side Chronicles which reimagined Resident Evil 2 in first person, and it looked incredible. What they could accomplish nowadays .... those are the thoughts dreams are made of lol.
