I actually found the DJ Hero games to be really refreshing, so I still think there's a place for music/rhythm games. But I will admit that the Rock Band and Guitar Hero franchises lost their appeal for me in recent years. Even Rock Band 3 last year, which I really enjoyed, didn't have that same fun factor.
I already thought L.A. Noire would be great but this has me even more excited. It's great to hear that there's a certain level of maturity to the story, and I love the idea of solving cases as a detective. Can't wait to get my hands on it in a couple of months.
Interesting article. I would definitely be in favor of a better balance between the gameplay of DKC Returns and the presentation of a game like Black Ops. It seems like CoD is moving towards all flash and little substance.
I can understand #6, but it just reminds me of how much I hate Rico from Killzone lol. Other than that great choices, Gordon and Alyx would probably be my personal #1.
All of the music in Chrono Trigger is fantastic, but "Schala" is one of my favorite pieces from the game. Great pick.
On a side note, it's been tough hearing about Japan. I hope the country can recover soon.
This seems like one of those games that is enjoyable for a little while but that I'd quickly find repetitive.
I suppose that opening paragraph says it all. It's a shame that they started out on such a low note for the single player DLC.
Like Dan said, this would be good advice for any video game to movie adaptation. But the very idea of an Uncharted movie already has me worried considering the storytelling is one of the strong points of the series. I honestly wouldn't be all that interested in seeing an Uncharted movie because of that, unless it was somehow amazing.
Awesome choices. And before I even read it I predicted the Golden Gun would be #1. How could it not be?
From what I've seen of the game I can totally understand where you're coming from. I haven't played the sequel yet, but I kind of felt the same way about the first game even though I really enjoyed it. Now it seems like they're toning down the horror elements even more, so I'm interested in playing it to see how it turned out.
Great picks all around, especially BioShock for #1.
The only one I don't agree with is Lightning but the rest of the list is really great, especially the top four (I'd probably pick those same four ladies for the top of my list).
I'm surprised Activision finally realized how the franchise was going downhill and decided to just stop. But I prefer to think of the fond memories from the first two games. Like you said, it introduced people to music they might not hear otherwise, including me.
I personally love what Sony has been doing with these HD re-releases, so count me on board for even more (on any platform). All of the games you mentioned are great suggestions, but in particular I would go crazy for KOTOR or a Jak & Daxter collection.
When I think of videogame music with lyrics that has worked in the past, it is in large part due to the fact that it's a nice change of pace. Like Mike brought up with RDR, I thought "Compass" was fantastic. But if a large majority of the score in RDR had lyrics I don't think I'd like it as much. There's a certain mood and tone you can achieve with instrumental scores that sometimes just doesn't work with lyrics. But I certainly wouldn't ignore the idea compl...
Great read. The way I see as long as I enjoyed the game for a majority of the time then I can say it was worth playing through it. The perfect combination of story, gameplay, and pacing is nearly impossible to pull off (though I might say Uncharted 2 did it), so there are always some flaws that I have to just try and ignore. It's a matter of how many and how often I must do that.
Even though Dante's Inferno was loosely based on its source material I found it really interesting that the game was inspired by a piece of classic literature. So in that sense I think it would be great if there were more literature-inspired game, because it wouldn't have to be some faithful adaptation to grab my attention. The way you brought up Shakespeare sounds like it could be really interesting.
Over the past few years I've played more FPSs which is probably why I'm starting to get tired of them no matter how great they are. So between the two I suppose I prefer third-person shooters, but it really just depends on the game.
All good choices for worst box art of the year but of the bunch I think Splatterhouse is definitely the worst. I could have come up with that in a second and I'm HORRIBLE at art and design.
I have to agree here. I played WoW for a little while and it was fun at times, but the grind was just too much for me. I didn't have the patience to reach the higher levels because of all the pointless enemies and random items I had to collect all the time. I guess MMORPGs just aren't for me.
