At a time when Microsoft is shifting much more money into their first party studios, Sony cannot afford to be canning projects. It is that simple, sequels to previous first party games is NOT enough, we need more new IP's.

160 million consoles sold between the two would say yes.
Is it a good idea? For the quality of the franchise and fans series fatigue, no, they should only make one game per year. But they won't do that not until current gen sales grow by another 10 mill each at least.
Don't ruin Gaming. Platinum Games make amazing action titles. They deserve to be experienced by all.
