The 3DS isn't being marketed, nor is its hardware intended to compete with smartphones and tablet PCs. Despite the squabble between Apple and Nintendo, the 3DS is strictly a handheld and the I-Pad/I-Phone is strictly a tablet PC/smartphone.
Your concern should be more directed towards Vita, as that's the product that's aiming for most of the mobile sector.
There's no doubt that Sony will do much better this time around in terms of garnering stronger 3rd party support, but the Vita, much moreso than the 3DS and much like its predecessor, is fighting in two different sectors where you can argue that the alternatives are better.
You say that Sony has learned its lesson, but I still see the same sony that's trying to go after the handheld and smartphone/tablet PC market with a jack-of-all-trades device. Not to mention that...

Ever since the inception of Pokemon, people have been clamoring for full 3D battles.
Now, I'm not saying GF will do it immediately, I'm just how massive a positive response Nintendo would receive in sales if a Pokemon game with 3D battles were put on the market.
Especially Pokemon.
Nintendo still has that trump card up their sleeve, and since they finally have a graphically capable system, when full 3D Pokemon battles are shown, you won't even be able to see a damn 3DS on display at any electronics or gaming store.
That's how fast those things will sell.

I'm not even sure if they did #1 since E3 2008, so I think that's a non issue.
