Ultimately, all they have done is guarantee that if Project Cars (1 or 2) comes to NX it will fail horribly. Nintendo fans will not support them after this.
The graphics are nothing mind blowingly awesome but they are far from bad.

Was Nintendo's E3 disappointing? Yes, it was. However, it is nowhere near as bad as most have made it out to be. There is more coming to Wii U than people realize, there are undoubtedly games in development that we don't know about, almost certainly some from Nintendo. Iwata said during a recent investors meeting that satisfying Wii U customers is a priority, and that they will not abandon Wii U or 3DS after the launch of the NX.

No, they should not skip E3, but they need a bigger presence, a stage show for all the big announcements/ trailers, a digital event for developr stories and additional info, and treehouse for gameplay demos.

Look at it this way. Was the E3 Direct disappointing? Yes. However, unless I am mistaken all the games shown will be out by next year's E3. Can't say the same for Sony and Microsoft.

I have PS4, Xbone, and Wii U, I play the PS4 and Wii U the most and definitely have the most fun with the Wii U.
