Virtual Reality is Too Expensive

Jason Stettner of Gamerheadquarters writes "The price of the Oculus Rift was certainly shocking too many which had expected lower pricing, though with the price of the second big virtual reality headset the HTC Vive is seems that virtual reality is too expensive."

Most tech is pretty pricey when it first comes onto the market, i remember when DVD players were pretty damn hefty

Kurisu3746d ago

Exactly, but some people fail to see this. I don't have a PC so I'm ruled out of Oculus, but I do have a PS4 so I will get PSVR eventually when there's plenty of software and the price (even though we don't know it yet) is more reasonable. I've plenty of non-VR games to look forward to in the meantime!

VR has been, and will be getting much more, free marketing through countless youtube channels, big and small. its gonna blow up once it hits consumer friendly consoles, no matter the price ($400-600). gran turismo enthusiasts have been waiting to play the real driving simulator in this way, as they already spend $1000 plus dollars to do so with racing wheels and driving rigs etc. GT will sell it and theyll probably make out well in japan alone. theyll do anything to get that much closer to real driving simulation.

i personally hope to see that first motorstorms trailer graphics come to light in VR. itll be adrenal glad abuse.

By the time PSVR has enough software, it'll be the Ps5

ShadowKnight3746d ago (Edited 3746d ago )

Expensive to who?? Because last time I check the Oculus rift was sold out. http://venturebeat.com/2016... and everyone really believes that most PC gamers don't have a high end rig. Yall keep believing that. All you have to do it upgrade your memory and GPU which is very easy.

skycaptin53746d ago

Well aware of it selling out, the question is how many of the headsets were created?

ShadowKnight3746d ago (Edited 3746d ago )

Their second batch pre-orders is sold out too. Must be a lot of PC gamers with VR compatible PC's out there. So much of being a gimmick accessory lol

@Cobra I think the PSVR is gonna help it turn mainstream for all VR headsets. Just seat back and relax and watch what happens lol. Don't forget word of mouth and positive reviews turns it mainstream bub. Mark my words just in case I'm wrong and you say I told you so

SonyWarrior3746d ago

the only reason oculus is sold out is because it was limited quantity

Aenea3746d ago

How big were those batches? 10 a piece or 1000 a piece? That it's sold out doesn't prove many PC gamers bought one, only actual numbers tell us. Besides, aren't there like 100+ million PC gamers out there? Even if they sold 200k of them it's not all that much compared to the number of PC gamers...

crazychris41243746d ago

Its new tech, of course its expensive. 4k TVs were once sold for tens or even hundreds of thousands of dollars. Now a great one is only a $1k.

Lord_Sloth3746d ago

Exactly. The price to pay for new technology is...well, the price. Otherwise you're just waiting for old tech as the price drops and they get closer to the next new tech.

There's nothing wrong with waiting of course, just as there's nothing wrong with early adopters either.

It's like these sites fail to understand how tech cycles work.

New idea -> Expensive R&D -> Years spent gaining software partnerships -> Limited early production runs to get hardware to developers -> Initial consumer launch at high price point -> Economics of scale kick in, cost to manufacture goes way down -> Product becomes palatable for mainstream audiences.

HDTVs went through it, phones went through it, DVD and bluray players went through it. Everything goes through it.

VR may be too expensive for you, the average citizen to want to drop $800 on, but if you wait a couple years, the barrier to entry will be half of what it is today.

It could be free and it wouldn't matter at this point. There isn't really a PCVR Market and I say that as a PCVR user. It is modders and enthusiasts with a few retail products on Steam.
