The Division “is a great single-player game”, according to Ubisoft

OnlySP: One of the most searched for answers on our site is whether or not The Division can be played as a single player experience. Up until now, the answer has been basically the same one we gave you for Destiny ahead of its release. You can play the game by yourself if you so choose, you’ll just basically be avoiding other players in the world.

Ubisoft listened to us Single player fans. I just like to be immersed in a game by myself no hate towards multiplayer games maybe I'm just getting older I used to adore online gaming between the ages of 17-21 but still enjoyed single player. Now I don't even play online games anymore.

jb2273794d ago

I wouldn't rush to that conclusion, a lot of this just sounds like PR speak to me still. We have yet to actually see what the campaign looks like, then you have statements like these:

“We don’t use a stick, but rather a carrot, to get people on board with multiplayer”

If the devs are respecting both kinds of players & working to create a worthwhile experience for all types of players, why would they incentivize mp whatsoever? There's nothing in the Uncharted games that even asks players to try out the mp, its an option there for anyone who so chooses. If the devs are actively trying to get sp gamers to journey into the mp realm, it sounds like they know that the solo campaign may not be satisfying in & of itself and in order for gamers to get a satisfying experience, they'd have to journey to the mp area where the main focus seems to lie.

I'd love to be wrong here, but even this article's writer tried to contact the devs to get a better idea as to whether or not there is some kind of worthwhile campaign & he's gone ignored so far. Doesn't sound good to me. I'm all for mp only games, they have as much right to exist as sp only games, its when devs & publishers try to goad sp gamers to picking up a game that they know may be an unsatisfying experience for them that I take issue. Its happened time & time again this gen already.

Sound like a PR BS, if they put in some campaign, it really must be half-assed added that late in the development of the game.

Somebody3794d ago

Same here. I'm primarily a singleplayer now. The Division sounded it offered something for everyone but I'm still waiting confirmation whether it will fully embrace a true singleplayer experience, i.e offline play.

"They still haven’t said yet if the game will offer and offline experience, but based on the amount of stuff going on behind the scenes, as noted in the previous paragraph, I don’t see an offline mode being a possibility." Yup, not really excited for the possibility...

I'm not against mp options but they are creeping more and more into sp games. Most of them ruined the sp experience they're supposed to "enhanced". MGSV: The Phantom Pain has parts of its sp items locked behind online feature-wall, you need to play the online portions to get the extra resources. Just Cause 3's performance issues is partly caused by the online leaderboard feature that kept trying to reach its servers.

The game is made to be played online and cooperatively. Personally not bothered at all about the story as this games best part will be the PvP in the zoned areas. Shame its only zoned areas as I would of loved it to be like Dayz where you can PvP anywhere on the map.

Somebody3794d ago

I'm well aware of the game's history. That's why I'm not interested with it when it was first announced. Then, they started talking about singleplayer campaigns so I'm eager to hear how it'll turn out.

It's fine that you are not bothered by the story but for us singleplayer we might be entering a disturbing future: singleplayer portions that require online connections or have items/features that are locked behind the online wall.

Remember the always-online DRM and "social features" that game devs tried to force on us? In my eyes the current trend of making games specifically designed for online but somehow tried to lure us with singleplayer missions is the same push but in reverse.

Psychotica3794d ago

Same here. After working all day I don't want to be social, I just want to get immersed in a game world by myself.

D3athc3ll3794d ago

I love playing games like Dota 2 with friends online, But I love to play my ps4 on my own. I usually purchase strong single player games with stories etc. Not the battlefront type of player. Nothing wrong with being one. It's just I want to relax in an immersive gameworld by myself most of the times.

gameforall3794d ago

That's what Bungie said about Destiny, how did that turn out

ninsigma3794d ago (Edited 3794d ago )

You can play destiny by yourself. Obviously you can't do strikes or raids by yourself (actually you can do strikes alone if you don't get matched with anyone) because they are designed for team work. All the main storey line and a lot of the post storey quest can be done by yourself.

Edit:
I wouldn't recommend buying destiny purely to play by yourself though if you're paying full price of course because, as it's a multiplayer focused game, it's longevity comes from playing with others.

Neonridr3794d ago

yes.. you can play by yourself up to a certain point. But unless you are willing to find groups, the Nightfall and Raids are out of the question.

ninsigma3794d ago

Yep. Which is why I don't recommend buying it to play by yourself unless you're willing to find a clan. I found a clan when I picked it up again for ttk and it made the game much better and I made some friends too. Great way to play it!

Kalebninja3794d ago

Is Ubisoft Bungie? Is the Division Destiny?

gameforall3794d ago

Has Ubisoft lied about a game before? Have they showed gameplay and then shipped a downgraded version??

kraenk123794d ago

There are several articles on here who already state The Division does stuff right Destiny did wrong initially.

Kalebninja3794d ago

That's not lying it couldn't run like it was shown on consoles so they had to downgrade it, it happens to a lot of games.

nucky643794d ago (Edited 3794d ago )

if it's online-only, then I have to pass. If I buy the game I should be able to play some part of it any time I want.

jb2273794d ago

It's definitely online only, no offline portion whatsoever from what's been said.

Germany73794d ago

Nah, probably it will not be a great SP experience, just like Destiny, these games are made for multiplayer experience.

ninsigma3794d ago (Edited 3794d ago )

Yeah, while its possible to play destiny by yourself (storey content anyway), it's a better experience when playing with people because that's how it was designed. You never know, maybe the division storey content is more fleshed out and more in line with what you would expect from any other storey focused game.

masterfox3794d ago (Edited 3794d ago )

No way I'm going back to a Destiny matchmaking mess type of game, same cr@#$p was told for Destiny but look how it ended. "can you play with nme ?", "can I join you ?", "can you help me with the nightfall?", "can I join the raid I'm level something ?","can you help me with the exotic swords ?", "can you help me with trials of Osiris ", "Off to LFG to see what I can find?", not joking you literally sometimes need to wait hours for those questions to be answered.

^^^ Well go to hell Destiny and now soon to become the same S#$5it Division(downgraded edition), thank god I'm cured from this cr@#%$p, games like witcher III, Bloodborne, MGS 5 were my saviors!
