While the Blu-Ray disc is license to the Blu-ray Disc Association (BDA), the "Blue Disk" logo and the Blu-Ray diodes are patent and trademark to 3 companies. Sony and Phillips for the one, and Sony and Pioneer for the other. So you see Sony is the major player in Blu-Ray.
Also the Microsoft patent in Blu-Ray is crap. VC-1 is not patent to Microsoft but the MPEG_LA. Which Sony is a member of.

@rhcpfan @hazardman, Wrong the VC-1 patent is own pay MPEG LA. Microsoft is part of the group but so is Sony, and Royalties dont go to the group, directly to the member that grants usage.
So Sony can rant usage to VC-1 to themselves
