The main problem for Sony is that the Xbox is a really good multiplatform-console. It's cheap and can play all multiplat games, and sometimes (not so much anymore though) with better quality. So for all those teenagers who just want to play GTA or Modern Warfare or whatever the xbox is a cheaper choice. That said the xbox got good exclusives too (Halo, Gears of War & Fable) so thats a pain for Sony aswell
