actually BR already has some of the 'big ones'. Target is the #2 brick and mortar retailer in the US if i'm not mistaken (of course Walmart is #1).
if Walmart goes blu-ray exclusive then you can pretty much dig the grave and nail the coffin shut for HD-DVD.
but i don't expect Walmart to go exclusive until next year. i would be shocked if Walmart went BR exclusive this year. but hey, anything can happen.
holy sh!t, i never knew BJ's was that big. 173 stores (they're like warehouses, not stores), 20,000 employees and $8 billion in revenue.
oh man, this is definately going to hurt hd-dvd.
they're like costco but only on the east coast.
@DJ, good post.
@rushbd: total ps3's sold globally is 4.48million not 6 million. the 1.4million the site uses might be just US numbers (and outdated numbers at that).
Woohoo, that would be hilarious. A blu-ray Xbox 360. but I'm sure we'll see it in the Xbox 720 (or whatever it will be called).
God, you people are idiots. The Today show is on NBC not MSNBC. Two different tv stations. MSNBC is only on cable. You don't need cable to get NBC.
Its like saying MS owns part of CNBC because they're associated with MSBNC. Sheesh, some of you people are such idiots.
@sidor:
Honestly, do you think the Wii and PS3 are competing for the same market? I don't think so, the two machines have very different target audiences. Its almost like saying the Nintendo DS is competing with the ps3.
Try playing a Wii game at 720p...AFAIK, it can't be done; meanwhile on the ps3 its standard.
IMO, it will be 2-3 years AT LEAST, until Sony decides to stop manufacturing the ps2 (the lowly ps1 only ended manufactering last year, 2006). Honestly, Sony might still be manufactering the ps2 in 7-8 years b/c in the new versions of the ps3 BC is less of a priority (one SKU can only emulate 70-80% of the games and the rumored $399 sku has no BC).
1up.com...a sucky gaming website. I never really cared about them. They're sort of like the USA Today of gaming sites. I like ign.com much better (gamespot.com is a distant 2nd).
Bentley vs Toyota?
No, I think you mean Lexus vs Ford
(aka expensive, reliable vs less expensive, unreliable)
@feralphoenix: no the comments weren't directed towards you. i was just saying in general.
This effort is going to make little difference in the battle between Blu-ray and HD-DVD. Less than 170,000 HD-DVD add-ons have been sold. The Xbox 360 HD-DVD player just is a repeat of the Sega CD- a gaming console add-on that's destined to fail in the marketplace (by fail, I mean not sell **relatively** large quantities).
The 20gb was at $499, the 40gb (proposed) will be at $399. That $100 difference is huge.
Also, the 20gb ps3 had the EE and GS. This proposed $399 ps3 will lose both (lower costs but no BC).
See this post I made on the Playstation3 forums:
http://boardsus.playstation...
I made the same prediction as the Xbox exec.
No Wifi, no card reader, no BC, I called it as well on the official PS3 message board.

The trailer is amazing but that 'analysis' (given in the source article) is pretty weak.
Oh sorry, I missed the part about them breaking in with the sledgehammer. My bad.
I love the idiotic comment in the article "Where are they getting a sledgehammer at 11-years-old?" (retarded) Target shopper Layshon Davis wondered.
Oh I don't know, maybe in Target's hardware department (or maybe this duo was daring and creative enough to venture to a nearby Lowes or Home depot).
don't be a p*ssy. are u going to let one review effect you or your purchasing decisions so much? wait until the other reviews come out (ign.com, gametrailers.com...if they have one, and only as a last resort gamespot.com).
wait until the other reviews come out and make your own decision. egm sucks anyways, their best days are behind them.
