Like I said, it didn't matter what it was about, only what people perceived it to be about. Perhaps prediction was the wrong word to use, it was more an indication at the state of social discourse.
It also doesn't matter what the media was trying to do - just how people interpreted them.
Its about perceivable changes in society. Gamers are part of society. I'd like to hear more about your point on gaming media resisting change.

To clarify - its more in response to offering a range of consoles with a constant ecosystem. It's the concept and premise rather than a physical competitor.

That doesn't matter - Sony can get the business model right. It's about the concept and premise behind the Steam Machines, rather than the units themselves.
They don't need everyone too, premium options aren't necessarily mass market. We're entering the PC age of consoles.

I hope that's the case. They do have a foundation they can build from. I said to the developer that I'd update the review if any updates come in, or if the price ever goes down.
