remember you basically have 2 different level attacks to block.
So having to hold a block button plus hold a stance button would have been very cumbersome.
Blocking is easy, it takes skill to be able to go from blocking and countering the light attacks to blocking and countering a sudden medium attack.
Try going through the demo countering alone and not attacking.
