I played the demo, it wasn't scary, but it did make me shake at times. The survival element is still there, i ran out of ammo half the way, so I had to use melee.

I'm hoping it's Dark Sector 2. Dark Sector 1 was a great game, nothing is more fun that combining melee and run-and-gun gameplay.
The whole game won't be based in the desert. Just like how U2 wasn't just based in snowy areas. My guess, is that drake takes a plane to the arabian desert, to find the lost city, and then some jealous baddies come and shoot it down. Maybe that's why he is stranded on a desert.
