I don't think the open-world trend supersedes linearity, I think it crashed head-on with the interactive movie trend causing amnesia, erratic behaviour and a severe identity crisis. At some point game publishers have to realize that a good RPG is made by skilled artists and developers, not by skilled market trend analysts.
