The analogy is pretty spot on.. only difference is typically when you buy a display copy of a game from gamestop.. it's in near mint condition. Gamestop regularly moves "new" product to used when a game gets discontinued or is just too damn old, rarely will you find a "new" open case on a shelf long for more then a year.

While I agree with you, I'm forced to point out a flaw in your logic. Those "preorder" boxes you see. Those are paid for by the publisher. Game stores don't print those. No way no how. Game stores sell shelf space to advertise games. This isn't just in game stores, it's in all kinds of stores. From electronics, to office supplies, to clothing. If an item isn't on sale and has some kind of elaborate display, the publisher/marker/whatever paid for it, not the store.
It'd make life so much easier.
