MGS4 was one of the most tacticle MP's I have ever played. I put over in over 400 hrs across multiple characters. Survival was not for gamers who weren't serious. If you liked MGS4 then you would have to have liked the MP cause there wasn't anything you could do in the game that did not come to the MP. In truth there are many reasons why a company would give something away. Some of those reasons have already been mentioned above. Look at other products. Go into any store and see how many "buy one get one free" offers they display.
Depending on how well the game did they could just look at free DLC as good PR/ marketing.

There was a time when I would think that to be only logical. These days I don't know. I too hope I get to see L4D1/2 ion my PS3 but I wont hold my breath. There are a couple of reasons I would buy an XBOX360 if I had extra time to play it and L4D is one of them. Right now I barely have time to play the PS3. Being a grown up sucks man.
