I remember when I used to game on the PC. Consoles were simply not on my radar and I didn't care at all what they were doing. As they just didn't interest me. How things have changed. Why are you not simply gaming on one of these monster PCs rather than obsessing about what the consoles are doing?
It's not practical to release a console with high end PC specs, as the high end PC parts have failed to keep within a decent power/heat/cost window. That problem needs t...
The comments Sony made about streaming zlib compressed content from the disk suggests they'll still be pulling in data from the disk. And this time the drive will be faster as well.
It's only really Microsoft who were forced down the full install route by their DRM intentions. I doubt if that's so easy to undo.
I think it's just that the PS4 launch bundle has sold out so can't keep selling, look at all the other versions in the top ten compared to that single Xbox One version.
@urwifewinder Ah a fan of the original, that must get annoying now it's been absorbed into mass culture.
Not even PC DRM is that restrictive when it comes to physical games, as long as a second hand game has the code you can still use it.
I thought it was interesting how they're just not able to answer the "end of life" question and acted surprised when it was asked. They made it an issue by choosing the DRM they have. Valve talked about iss...
@Death Because it had too much of a learning curve for average developers?
IBM have also stopped developing the chip, so it's not really an option.
Doesn't that comment make your Anonymous avatar somewhat ironic? Why volunteer for DRM and restrictions when you can vote with your money for a system that offers more freedom (or stick with the one you've got). The latter might be the best option if you're an xbox fan, a way to encourage Microsoft to change some of their policies before or after release.
@bullseye, you can do that on the PS3 now. We've got two PS3's in the house and we can play multiplayer with the same copy of the game installed on two consoles. The limit used to be five consoles.
The ram for social features/video uploading etc. will be that which is already reserved for the OS. Everything should be available for the games.
As for what the RAM can be used for:
* Higher res textures will make games look better
* Texture caching
* Larger areas, increased draw distance
* Less loading screens because of more pre-loading of resources, not just game areas but things like inventory screens, maps etc.
* More state can b...
That's not the kind of bandwidth he was talking about. He means Insomniac's bandwidth, i.e. their development throughput. Taking on the Wii U as well would have slowed them down.
I think it's partly due to the fact that a console has to justify it's position in the front room connected to the TV. They're big and take up a lot of space. So do you want those functions in the console, or does it need to compete for space with a set-top box / DVD / blu-ray player? Usually not everyone in a household is a gamer, so if you want that premium slot in front of the TV you need to be able to sell yourself to different audiences.
When I was a kid thes...
It did do well in in the first week, but the drop off since then has been more dramatic. Not to say they can't recover, but these comparisons with early last gen sales seem to avoid a lot of the detail (comparing just the first week, that the PS3 was supply constrained and not a worldwide release). How do the cumulative sales compare?
The specs looked pretty finalized to me, the main thing they didn't reveal was what it looked like.
I don't really see that it matters that much, the graphics and effects may be nicer but the games are hardly a big jump over what you get on a console. A big gaming rig may be packed with power but it rarely seem to be used for more than keeping up with the higher resolution of PC monitors.
I've seen comments like this a few times by PC gamers and I'm not sure I'm getting it. Surely if VR tech takes off it would just be an update away. The price would be higher if it shipped with a VR headset, the tech is relatively immature and a bit niche, if it doesn't take off it could be the equivalent of shipping with a VirtualBoy.
So why are people complaining about (and often buying) substandard console ports rather than ignoring them and concentrating on the PC exclusives?
The keyboard gives less fluid movement and the mouse has a tendency to turn shooters into a twitchy point and click, so I still prefer using a controller.
I used to game solely on PC but mostly gave it up for the PS1/2/3 when it largely became Windows only. However with Steam on Linux and various Kickstarter projects that may change with the next console transition.
It can't just be down to phishing, there must be some other reason, PSN would be just as susceptible to phishing attacks.
Headline should be "Boy, 8, Kills Gran After Getting Hands on Loaded Gun"
