People have to realize that the Wii U was launched during the holidays, the busiest season of the year for buying consoles.
While the PS4 sold few thousand less than the Wii U but months passed after the holiday. Do the math with those variants in mind.
I'll go on record and say the PS3 and Xbox 360 were also capable of 1080p. Devs decided to go another route, have better quality visuals over resolution.

The way I see it.
The Xbox One should have been at the same level as the PS4 is right now and do 1080p all the time.
The PS4 on the other hand should have been 2 times stronger than what it is and easily do constant 1080p 60fps.
But hey, both consoles are strong enough for most consumers that own 1080p HD TVs.
HD TVs took a long while before they even were "main-stream".
It took at least 5 years just to get it mainstream and ...

If it worked for Microsoft and the Xbox, then it'll work for PlayStation.
It'll give them the money needed to enhanced their online infrastructure.
As a businessman, billions of dollars in revenue is not something to look away from.
