If you ask me it was pretty inconsiderate of the robber to force the kid to make that decision. I don't know how mentally strong he is but if he isn't the kid might be blaming himself.
You can't say killing wasn't necessary when we were'nt there just like I can't say it was necessary because I wasn't there. However as the story was reported it seems he was in the heat of the moment and no one can analyze those reactions.
