The difference with games is that you're "practicing" and "reacting" and being rewarded in-game. Other forms of media are passive, so you don't get the same cocktail of hormones and the reward for survival.

Funny that, I've been having a Facebook fight about exactly this. Gamers are now so fickle. One guy said he wasn't going to play Destiny because it looked "empty" and didn't feel like it caught his attention in an hour. One hour he gave the beta. You can't give RPG games an hour. Even though it's a shooter, it's a lot deeper than that. I was sceptical about Destiny, but have played enough of it to really respect where they're going with it.
