The whole point of the moon mission was for the mission. Just like on earth you can go do the mission, but if you want you can explore the rest of earth and not do the mission. Just because they didn't have some crazy boss fight at the end of the tunnel or some loot doesn't mean they won't have it in full game, this is the beta after all.
