this Generation of cards from Nvidia are power hungry and the heat is unforgivable at all. While on the AMD side the CrossfireX scaling is really bad and lot's of drivers issues, it can be fixed. Nvidia cards on the other hand can't be fixed through a software update.
with this in mind if you want the best performance, Nvidia is the way to Go. Unless you opt-out for the HD 5970, The beast of this generation of cards.
