I would be more open to a darker link as skin pigment is just a natural effect caused by adaption to high amounts of UVR. A change in the game world could result in the entire population being darker. I don't favor a female link because its a common belief that the body and soul are part of each other and meant for each other. So if he was female he wouldn't be the same person.
